Thrift Store Finds

Saturday my husband had all day conferences as part of his continuing education requirements for his EMT job.  He had a long dinner break at 5, so he wanted us to eat with him, since he was just in Minot, and hadn't seen Elliott much at all during the week.  Elliott had a game Saturday at eleven so we had to figure out what to do for the 5 hours in between, so we didn't have to drive all the way home for just a short amount of time.

So we decided to go thrift store shopping.  We don't shop at thrift stores very regularly, mainly because of time constraints.  We are usually only in Minot once or twice a week, and one of those days is Sunday for church.  Most thrift stores around here are closed on Sundays.

The first shop we went to was our favorite.  We've found a variety of different things there in the past, but Saturday we weren't really looking for anything specific.  We looked around for a little while, but all we ended up buying were books and a pair of jeans for me.  The jeans are in great condition, with no signs of wear.  They were 25% off of $3.50.  The books we bought for Elliott were $.50 and the book for me was $2.  My sister was with us, and she ended up just buying a record.

Our next stop was Goodwill.  It seems like there, we can either find a bunch of stuff, or we find nothing.  Saturday we had pretty good luck.  We found 2 CD's that are not pictured (Casting Crowns and Plus One) for $1.99 each.  We also bought Scattergories Junior for $3, and several books, ranging from $.50 for most of the paperbacks for Elliott, up to $2 for the Dinosaur hard back book.  The Lord of the Rings set was $10, and is in VERY good shape.  It doesn't even look like 2 of them had ever been opened, let alone read.
We've been working on adding more variety to our chapter book collection, and $.50 is the perfect price to try something new!
The Gus books were some of my very favorites when I was little.  I remember reading them to my Grandma over and over and over again, so I just had to buy that one when I found it. :)

I didn't realize the picture was fuzzy until I added it here.  Sorry!  I read these books once a long time ago, but would like to read them again.

My sister ended up finding several books for her classroom at Goodwill, and a couple of toys as well.

Great finds! I loved The Lovely Bones. Actually bought my copy at the thrift store too lol. The book was a lot better than the movie, I think.

I love buying books at the thrift store - especially kids books. It is simply the best value, and after a few times being read, new books look used anyway:) Great finds Carla!

I'm really looking forward to reading The Lovely Bones. My husband bought me a Kindle Fire for our anniversary last year, so I would stop buying so many books that I then have to find a place for. Buying the Lovely Bones at the thrift store was much cheaper than buying it for my Kindle, though, and it's been recommended by several of my friends.

I totally agree on buying used books when possible for Elliott, too. Just about the only place I get him new books is through Scholastic Book Clubs. You can find fantastic deals on books there pretty frequently. I also love that you can see which grade they are targeted to, plus the reading level. The fact that his teacher gets bonus points to use in her classroom is just an added plus.
