Time for School to Start

My son starts kindergarten next week.  It's hard for me to believe it.  He's slightly nervous about me leaving him somewhere else all day, but otherwise he's ready.  He doesn't have a school uniform, so buying clothes was easy and relatively cheap.  He also has a really short list of school supplies that he needs, so those were bought cheap, too.

I'm not looking forward to the start of school.  I can count on one hand the number of times he's been left with a babysitter since we moved to our current house, in July 2007.  He's done fine with sitters since he turned 4, but it's been short stints both times.  At least his first day of kindergarten is just a half day.

He's more than ready for school academically, and socially as well, as far as playing well with others, sharing, and making friends easily.  But he is his father's son, which means he has a defiant streak at least a mile wide, and tends to get into trouble if he's bored (which he might be, considering he already has all the skills necessary for leaving kindergarten).  He's excited about everything now, though, and we've worked out a reward system at home, based on how he does at school, so I think that will help, too.  We've used a rewards system at home to keep him on task for over a year now, and it's worked well, so we're just adjusting it a little to make it work and take into account his behavior at school, too.

When do your kids go back to school?  Are they excited?

Today was Elliott's first day. He cried for the first five minutes, and rather loudly apparently. But once he calmed down, the teacher said he was great for the rest of the day. He got in trouble once for tipping his chair and falling out, but was otherwise very well behaved. He can't wait for school tomorrow.
